Joey Stylez shares new track, Super Power

From the time he started his creative journey, to the present, he has always made music a tool to express his individuality. The Stylez part of his energetic persona says a lot about his ability to dabble in all genres of music. His catalogue has tracks with the likes of Grammy Award winning producer James Ho (Malay), band Dragonette and rappers Bun B & Ty Dolla $ign.

He just released a new single, "Super Power", which is a hip hop track drawing influence from rock and pop. Watch the new video and read our interview with Joey below!

What is the inspiration behind your new single, "Super Power"?

I walked into the crib and was feeling like had my glow on. My aura felt like it was hitting hard that night, so I just let it out on the track. The song is about self belief and unlocking our God Given gifts which I like to call our Super Powers. And I’m really a fashion type of cat and believe if you wanna be Chief than you need to dress like the Chief, so there is also that fashion element on the record.

What made you discover your passion for creating the music you make?

I always follow my spirit. I used to confuse the voice of my brain with the voice of my spirit, and it brought me down some dangerous roads. But now I think I’ve found my way to distinguish between the two and life has never been so good. Everything I do no matter how street or dark it is, it will always have spirit at the core of it.

What places in your mind do you go to channel and craft your songs?

For me I shut off my mind. Bruce Lee said it perfectly in Enter the Dragon and I couldn’t explain it any better. When an athlete is setting a new record I really believe the mind is turned off in those magic moments, and that the creator is with you as you enter into that flow state.

What are your favorite venues to perform at? and if you had to choose, do you feel more comfortable in the studio or onstage, and

why?

I played in front of 60,000 people and I once performed for one older lady who danced the whole night in an empty bar, haha. But my thing is always give it 1000%. There is something that draws me to the small and grimy punk rock venues though, I feel the energy is nuts!!

What does your writing process look like? What is the process like? Does it take you days, weeks, even longer? How does the perfect piece come together?

I don’t rush any song I just write until I feel it’s done, but typically a song will take about an hour to write.

In a couple short sentences how would you define your sound?

If you asked me this six years ago I couldn’t give you a straight answer, but now I got it locked down to Indie Hip Pop.

This year is shaping up to be a great musical year for you. What do you hope to accomplish as we head towards 2020?

You know just like any musician you want that cover of Rolling Stone magazine, A sold out show at Madison Square Garden and your Grammy to go with it. I think go for it and set your goals high. Why not? Dreamers give the world hope and who said a little hope is bad for a person. I want big streams and social media numbers so I can increase my overall presence and use it for promoting wellness around the world.
